Parashara's Light

Q.1 Is Parashara's Light available for download online?
Ans. Parashara's Light 9 is provided as a download. There is no CD involved.

Q.2 Is Parashara's Light compatible with Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8/10?
Ans. Yes, Parashara's Light and Vedic astrology Bookshelf work perfectly on Windows XP/Vista/windows 7/Windows 8 and Windows 10 as well as Macintosh OS X (10.6 and up). Only Shri Muhurta 1.3 is not compatible with Vista and later.

Q.3 I have purchased the software, how do I get a password?
Ans. The first step is to install the software. Please follow the installation instructions that came with the program. Next, launch the software.

  1. If you have Internet activated on your system, the software will get registered/activated automatically.
  2. If for some reason this does not happen successfully, please register by entering your customer Id on the registration screen. Please note that Internet has to be available on your system for this procedure also.
  3. If Internet is not available, you can select the manual password entry option. The registration screen should now come up with a system id.You can mail this system Id to us at sales@parashara.com quoting your Customer ID number and we shall email you the Username and Password.

Q.4 The password provided by you is not working.
Ans. First of all please check whether you have provided the correct system ID to us. Then please ensure that the username and password are entered exactly as given. They are both case sensitive, and we recommend that you copy paste the same to avoid any typos. In nearly all case where people have problems, it is due to a typo.

Q.5 Every time I format the system I get a different system ID ?
Ans. The software requires a new password when it detects that the program is being installed for the first time. Naturally, when the hard drive has been reformatted you would need to reinstall the program and that will generate a different system ID # (from the previous one). Any time this happens, you will need to request a new password from us.

Q.6 My System IDs is: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, is this enough? Please send me my password.
Ans. This is not your system ID. These are details of your operating system.

  1. Please install the program (PL5.0, Pl6.0, PL6.1, PL7)
  2. When you run the program you will get three options. Click on the option that says you have purchased it and need to enter your password. This will bring up the password window.
  3. This window has a five digit system ID (for PL5) and a 7 digit system ID (for PL6), which you need to send to us so that we can provide the password.

Q.7 I have a copy of Parashara's Light which came with Andrew Bloomfield's book on Vedic Astrology. Please provide me with a password to activate the software.
Ans. A book by 'Andrew Bloomfield' called 'Beginners Guide to Vedic Astrology' has been released with a copy of the Parashara's Light CD in it. This is an evaluation copy which comes to you free with the software and allows you to cast your chart. We have a slide show about the features of the software available online. If you wish to have a fully functional licensed version of Parashara's Light, then you have the option to upgrade to the full version of PL 7.0 for $284. The regular price for the full version is $299 but we will give you a refund of $15, as compensation towards the purchase price of the book. You can buy your license and get your activation password online from our website to gain instant access to your software:
www.parashara.com/buy.asp or you can also purchase the software by calling 1-800-459-6847 during our customer service hours M-F 9:30am-4:45 pm Central Time, USA. You can always email us on sales@parashara.com for further queries.

Q.8 How do I update my PL?
Ans. Please send an email to
sales@parashara.com to get more information about updating to the latest version of Parashara's Light. Please mention your customer Id and licensee name.

Q.10 Is there a bug fix for the Gochara and Varshaphala Dasha Reports in Parashara's Light 6.0 ?
Ans. Please visit
www.parashara.com/downloads.html and download the latest build of Parashara's Light 6.0. Please keep your customer ID ready to log on to the website. Once the download is complete, you need to do the following.
Please launch Windows Explorer and go to the 'Extras1 folder', which you will find in the Pl6 directory. Double click on it to open it. There will be many files in this folder, please look and find the files named: Pic701.txt Pic422.txt Pic423.txt These last two files will be near the end of the list of files so look for them there. Note: you want to make sure that your are finding the files with the prefix named "Pic", not "Pib' After you locate these files, you need to delete them. To do this once you find them, right click on them and select the option to delete. Continue to do this until all three of the above files have been removed from the Extras 1 folder.
After you have finished these steps with the Extras 1 Folder, Go back up a level into the PL6 folder and look to see if you can find a folder called Extras 2 If so repeat the above steps here also. After you've completed these steps, your Gochara and Varshaphala Dasha Interpretations should be working.

Q.11 Is the precession a constant or fixed? What Ephemeris does Parashara's Light use? Can this calculation be customized?
Ans. The precession is calculated using a formula, and it's value varies from year to year. The calculation we used is based on the NASA JPL Ephermis, and as such it is not a customizable feature.

Q.12 Does the software calculate the "Point of fortune"?
Ans. Our software uses similar calculations as the point of fortune, which are called Sahams and are very similar in nature to the Point of fortune calculation that is found in Western Astrology.

Q.13 Does the software calculate the Vertex?
Ans. No it does not.

Q.14 Can the transits be calculated for a specific location other than the birth location?
Ans. Yes, please edit the location by clicking on 'Astrologer's Location' in the Edit menu, and the animated transits will be based on that location.

Q.15 How can I access all the chart data that is showing up in the standard system file dialog through fancy &/or simple file manager? Some charts seem to be missing when I use the filemanager.
Ans. Close Parashara's light. Open Windows Explorer, and locate the PL6 directory. In the PL6 directory, there is a 'Charts' folder. Look for files starting with the name 'Summary'. They may appear as 'Summary.100' or 'Summary.101'. Please delete these files. These are index files and the program will re-create them automatically. You shoul dnow be able to access all your chart data through the filemanager.

Q.16 How do I assign various charts to different new Folders?
Ans. This is only possible in versions 6.1 and up. To assign a chart to a group you need to have a new group in place. In the right hand column under Groups, you will see an entry 'All Charts'. Select this and right click on it. You will get to the option 'Create a Group'. Once created, this will show up under the All charts list. Now in the left hand column, select the chart you need to assign. Right click and assign to the appropriate group.

Q.17 My mouse does not have right click option, what do I do?
Ans. On the Macintosh, most mice do not have two buttons. To right click, press the Control Key and click on the mouse button simultaneously. This will have the same effect as the right click of the mouse.

Q.18 I have the 'General Protection Fault' problem, what is the problem.
Ans. There could be many reasons, ranging from a bug in the software, to your CPU being overheated. Please provide the following information by email to
sales@parashara.com

  1. Have you upgraded to the most recent version of Parashara's Light using the download patch from www.parashara.com? This is important to do before anything else. You will need your customer number (User ID). It may be on a sticker on your CD, or email us with your full name for this. Installing this download may solve your problem right away.
Did the actual installation process from the PL6 CD complete successfully? Did it give a confirmation screen?
  2. When did the "General Protection Fault" error message happen? During installation, or when launching the program afterwards? Upon attempting to enter a password? Or even just when clicking on a chart to view after launching the program?
  3. Did you transfer chart files from the previous harddrive? How many? Where are they deposited?
  4. Did you transfer chart files from the previous harddrive? How many? Where are they deposited?
  5. Is the harddrive partitioned? Is Windows on the same partition as Parashara's Light? Which one?
  6. What is your Windows version?

Q.19 Does 'Parashara's Light' make accurate prediction or gives accurate data? Is it enough to answer horary questions?
Ans. Yes, the calculations in Parashara's Light are very accurate, and the interpretative tools too. This is evidenced by the fact that most professional Vedic astrologers in the world use our software. Specifically, in the U.S. most members and teachers of the ACVA (American College of Vedic Astrology) use our software.
The answering of a prashna question is a task for the astrologer, and is not done by the software.

Q.21 When there is a provision of PREV NEXT in the worksheet help bottom right and on top left of [1 of 9] doesn't this mean at least 9 worksheets can be viewed, by using the Prev or Next button?
Ans. "1 of 9" implies that the worksheet help is divided into 9 parts and the next button moves the help notes forward. The WS remains at No 1. These notes are just to help you understand the contents of the worksheet. Once you are familiar with the worksheet contents, please hide the help notes through the Help menu. To navigate from 1st to 2nd worksheet, please use the up and down arrow keys of the keyboard.

Q.22 I made some changes in the pre-designed worksheets in Parashara's Light and now want to revert to the original design.
Ans. Please use the 'Reset to original' button in the Worksheet Properties screen to restore default worksheets. The Worksheet Properties screen can be brought up by clicking on the worksheet title in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Q.23 Will Parashara's Light run on my Macintosh system 9?
Ans. Parashara's Light 8, the latest version for Mac will run on system 10 or higher only. If you have system 9 or lower, you will have to upgrade your system to run the new Mac version of PL.

Q.24 When I type in the birthday for say someone born in 1977 the program changes the year to 2000.
Ans. That only happens when the date you have entered is in an unrecognized format. For date entry, you can use any of the following formats and the program will accept it.
Date Entry Acceptable formats
DD mon YYYY 10 Jan 2002 (this is the standard format)
DD mon YY 10 Jan 02
Mon DD YYYY Jan 10 2002
Mon DD YY Jan 10 02
DD MM YYYY 10-1-2002 or 10/1/2002 or 10 1 2002
DD MM YY 10-1-02 or 10/1/02 or 10 1 02

If you enter 2nd March 1972 for instance, then the date changes to 2000 automatically. This means the program does not accept "2nd", "3rd", "4th" etc.

Q.25 Does your software have elements that relate to Vastu Shastra for architectural features?
Ans. We do not support Vastu recommendations in our software. Our software is a Vedic Astrology software for making horoscopes (Parashara's Light) and for finding Muhurtas (Shri Muhurta).

Q.26 Between your worksheets number 1 and 2, one can see three different "Planetary Information" tables, but when you left click on an open space on them all the three appear in the menu of tables under the exact same heading.
Ans. They are in fact all the same table, but with different columns selected. You can choose which columns to see with the Advanced Options command. Right click on the Planetary info table to select this command.

Only the planetary details will show which have been selected (they will be listed in the advanced options screen below the listbox).

So multiple tables show different information entirely due to different columns being selected, although they have been created with the same combination in the Charts and Tables Selection window.

Q.27 Can I import my notes and customized worksheets of my earlier version of PL?
Ans. Due to significant changes and enhancements to the worksheet, the file format of the worksheets had to be changed significantly as of PL6.1.5, and is not compatible with previous versions. So presently Pl6.1.5 and later does not support the import of customized worksheets made in the other versions.

Notes are stored within each individual chart, so they will be imported fine when you import your old charts.

Q.28 I am having difficulty loading the software even though my computer has the appropriate specifications. Can you give me some idea what the problem may be. It installs to 92% and then hangs.
Ans. It seems that your CD drive is not functioning properly. We recommend that you copy the contents of the Cd on to your system and then try installing the program by clicking on Setup.exe.
Step by step guide to copy the contents of the Cd on your system.

  1. Launch Windows Explorer. This is the application that you can use to explore files on your computer. Right-click on the Start button, and select "explore".

You can also click on the Windows icon key and the 'E' alphabet key simultaneously on your keyboard for this to open up.
  2. Click on D: or E: depending on the location where your Cd drive is installed. Select all the contents of the CD. Now right click on it and select the copy option.

Now click on C: and select the Paste option from the list which appears when you right click. All the contents of the Cd will be copied here.

Now run the file 'Setup.exe' from this new location to install the software.

Q.29 PL2000 is asking for a new password all of a sudden.
Ans. If you have Windows XP, the reason is most likely that Daylight savings just started or ended, and Windows XP has modified the date/time stamp of all files on your computer are sensitive to that change and will unfortunately stop recognizing the password as being entered. You will need a new password to reactivate. Please mail the new system ID to
sales@parashara.com and we will provide you a new password.

Alternatively, you can upgrade to the latest version, which is not sensitive to this unusual behavior of Windows XP.

Q.30 Do you support AstroCartography?
Ans. Yes, Parashara's Light does have a Change Location Tool. This tool enables you to see how the Ascendant of birth would have been for any location on Earth. You can move the cursor to the place of your choice on the World Map and see the Ascendant for that location displayed. If you click on that position, the natal chart and all other calculations are updated for that location.

Q.31 I am unable to read many of the charts and reference materials your program produces because it is overlapping. When I resize the windows the text simply gets bigger - the problem is not solved. Can you help me please?
Ans. Please resize the window by dragging it from the corner and not the sides. You can now set it to a comfortable size without the text overlapping.

Q.32 The list of avasthas for planets, seen from the report menu/calculation/avastha option, seems to differ from the interpretation coming up in the BPHS classical reference menu commentary option.
Ans. This was a bug in an earlier version of Parashara's Light and has been rectified in the current version.

Q.33 The Planetary Avasthas Report gives different results for the Shayanadi Avastha on screen and in the printout.
Ans. Please delete the file "pic333.txt" from the Extras1 folder in the PL directory, and the problem should be fixed.

Q.34 The Ashtakavarga Reductions report shows up blank without the Trikona and Ekadipathya reductions filled out in the charts.
Ans. This was a bug, and has been fixed in the latest versions.

Q.35 Some charts have only letters where the next chart on the same screen has glyphs.
Ans. This was a bug in the earlier version of Parashara's Light and has been rectified in the current version.

Q.36 I've been trying to set a model of my own to be the default print job. So far, I've been unable to do so. I check the box to make it the default and it never works. Do you have any ideas as to what I can do?
Ans. There is a chance that some other model has also been checked as the default model. If you look at the lower left hand corner of the report, you will find the model number that is being printed by default in your PL program. Next, please go to Print Menu/Select Model and uncheck the default model checkbox of that model.

Now select the model that you want to save as your default model and check it.

Now close Parashara's Light. Restart and your selected model will be the default model.

Q.37 I cannot open Parashara's Light on my Computer Windows XP. The message I get is:
"16 bit Windows SubsystemC:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.NT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications, Choose "close" to terminate the application."

Ans. We see from this message that you must have installed Service Pack 2 of Windows XP. That seems to be causing some file corruption for some people, causing Windows XP to be incompatible with any 16 bit applications. If you have any other 16 bit applications, they won't work either.

There are 2 ways to get around this Windows XP bug. One is to repair that with the info from the following Microsoft support page link or call Microsoft technical support. The other is to upgrade to our 32-bit version of Parashara's Light 6.1 which will not be affected by this problem.

The Microsoft support link is :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

Q.38 In PL6.1.5, I get an incorrect password message followed by three exclamation marks.
Ans. You need to run a mini installer (Setup.exe for Win.zip) which you can request for by mailing
sales@parashara.com. Once you unzip and install this file by clicking on the Setup.exe file, your program will accept the password.

Q.39 Can you please advise me as to which kind of time is mentioned in the Transit/Dasha Report for the movement of the planets. Is it Indian time or GMT or Sydney time, etc.?
Ans. The program takes the time according to the details you have saved in the Astrologer's Current Location screen in the Edit menu.

Q.40 How do you delete a chart that you have entered and saved but now want to get rid of?
Ans. Clock on to the File Menu and select the File Manager command. In the second column select the chart you wish to delete. Right click on it and select "delete" from the popup menu.

Q.41 Under Mangala Dosha Cancellations there is one sutra that says that the Mangala Dosa is cancelled if, when Mangala is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12 in one chart, Shani is in one of these houses in the other chart. The software applied this rule in a case where Mangala is in the 8th house in one chart and Shani is in the second house of the other. Why is that? Is it an error or because Saturn is 7th from the 8th?
Ans. Some schools of thought consider Mars in Second House of the Birth Chart as an additional condition for Mangala Dosha, and the presence of Saturn in Second house of the Birth Chart as an additional cancellation condition.

Q.42 What do I do if there is no listing for a city in the Atlas. Do you have a fix for this?
Ans. Please select the Manual Lookup Option and enter the coordinates manually after typing in the city name.

Shri Muhurta

Q.1 Is Shri Muhurta. compatible with XP and VISTA?
Ans. Shri Muhurta 1.3 is not compatible with Windows Vista or later. We are currently working on a new version that will be compatible with Vista. SM 1.3 is compatible with XP, however there are sometimes problems with launching SM after the password is entered. If Shri Muhurta crashes unexpectedly at the very beginning, it may be necessary to save a small file called "mscal.ocx" into your Muhurta folder. Please look out for all instances of a file called mscal.ocx on your system. You will in all probability find multiple instances of the same.

To find the location of the files, go to the Start button located at the lower left side of your computer screen. Look for the 'Search' icon in the list [for Win XP] and 'Find' icon [for Win 98] and select the 'Files or Folders' option.

Enter the file name: mscal.ocx in the name field and select all the directories where you want to run your search in the 'Look In' drop down menu. For instance it may be defaulted to the setting 'Local Hard drives', which is ideal. Please be sure that the box titled 'Include subfolders is selected'.

After you have completed entering the qualifications for your search, click the 'Search' [for Win XP] or 'Find now' [for Win 98] button. Your computer will now run a search.

Once the search process is over, on the right side of the screen, you will find a list of multiple files bearing the same name 'mscal.ocx' but with different dates for modification. Please select the file that has the latest modified date. Right click on it and select 'Copy'.

Launch Windows Explorer.

This is the application that you can use to explore files on your computer.

Right-click on the Start button, and select "explore".

You can also click on the Windows icon key and the 'E' alphabet key simultaneously on your keyboard for this to open up.

Click on C: or D: depending on the location where your Shri Muhurta program is installed. In all probability, you will find it in C: Now look for the 'Muhurta' folder and right click on it. Select the Paste option.

You may be asked if you wish to overwrite an existing file by the same name. Please confirm.

You can now run Shri Muhurta.

Q.2 Shri Muhurta does not accept the date.
Ans. Please ensure that you are entering the date in the correct format.

Example: Aug 31, 2004.

Also, if you are using Shri Muhurta outside of the US and Canada with Windows XP or 2000, you might need to set the Regional Settings of Windows to English (United States) in order to operate the program. Do this by clicking the following: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Regional Settings, English (United States) [for Windows 98] and Start, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, English (United States [for Windows XP].

Q.3 Shri Muhurta gives an error message : 'Unable to initialize the data base engine DAO/jet'
Ans. You need to install an ado driver on your system in order to resolve this issue. As the size of this driver is big (7.5mb), we cannot send it to you as an email attachment. So you need to download it through the internet from our website.

Please click on the following URL and the download will automatically start
http://www.parashara.com/download/adodriver.exe (You must of course have your machine connected to the internet).

A window will come up prompting you to save the file adodriver.exe to your system. by setting a path.

Now double click on this file. A window asking you to select a path to extract the files.

By default the files will be unzipped to C:\. Please change the path if you wish to unzip it elsewhere. Now click on the 'Unzip' button.

This exercise will create a folder on your system called adodriver. Double click on this folder to expand it.

Now run the file: setup.exe. After you have run it, please restart your system.

Q.4 When I try to install the DAO/Jet setup.exe from your site (refer FAQ No. 3), it gives an error that it's already installed.
Ans. The current version of Dao dll on your system is a more advanced version than the Dao dll supplied with Shri Muhurta. But Shri Muhurta needs the Dao dll version that has been supplied with the software itself. So there are two solutions:

a) Please reinstall Shri Muhurta. Sometimes the Dll's supplied with Muhurta fail to register and reinstallation forces them to register.

b) If this does not work, you need to manually register the Dao dll.

To manually register, please go to the ‘Start’ menu of your computer and select ‘Run’. In the 'Open:' field please type the following exactly : regsvr32 "C:\muhurta\dao350.dll"

Please note that if Shri Muhurta is not installed on the C drive on your system, then 'C:' in the above line should be replaced by the drive name (eg. D: or F: etc.) where Shri Muhurta is installed.

Q.5 We are unable to download the adodriver.exe. Please advise
Ans. This is probably due to a low speed of your internet connection. The size of the file is big and perhaps the download gets aborted mid way. We recommend that you use some Download facilitators like Net Ants (freely available on the net). This will help you download in parts and take up from where you last left.

Q.6 When you click on the muhurta 'Recover due Money', the program crashes.
Ans. Please click on the following URL and the download will automatically start
http://www.parashara.com/download/Muhurtdb.mdb (You must of course have your machine connected to the internet).

A window will come up prompting you to save the file muhurtdb.mdb to your system. by setting a path.

Please launch Windows Explorer. Locate this file and select it. Right click on it and select 'Copy'.

Q.8 Why is there a disagreement in muhurta dates between Parashara's Light and Shri Muhurta?
Ans. Parashara's Light only rates the Panchang factors, which only make a small portion of the numerous calculations used in Shri Muhurta. So the rating in Parashara's Light should never be used alone for judging a Muhurta chart in an authentic classical way. In general, the two will vary a lot. However, some people use the Panchang information with so much weight that they rely on it fully, a practise we would not recommend.

Q.9 Why are there score inconsistencies in Shri Muhurta. Why do we get different set days by changing the time span?
Ans. To calculate each and every chart for say 6 months, one would have to calculate 6x30x24x60 charts (every minute something could change). A software following such algorithm would be unacceptably slow, especially when Shri Muhurta was developed it was totally unacceptable. So a great number of optimizations are used, which make fairly educated guesses about how auspicious days are. This is based on sampling. By resampling, a somewhat different set of days is found. This may make the software seem arbitrary to a user, and we understand that very well, but the worst case is that a potentially good day was left out because of the sampling being too small. It does NOT mean the calculations are not accurate.

Q.10 Why are there different scores for the same days?
Ans. The "scores" are just relative indicators. They mean nothing in themselves. What is the meaning of "40"? It has no meaning other than giving you a number to compare with.

Q.11 Why are scores are different when evaluating the day, and when looking at the highest score within a day?
Ans. Again, when the days are sampled, not every minute of that day can be scanned. So a sample is used to estimate the day's auspiciousness. Once the day is selected, and every minute is evaluated, only than the days "true" highest score is found.

We hope this helps you appreciate the software a bit more. SM is extremely complex in how it tries to work around the calculative bottlenecks. In our next update, we will tackle this issue more, and also support higher sampling rates as now computers are so much faster. Software development never stops!

Q.12 When I start Shri Muhurta, the following message appears: ‘Microsoft Jet Database Engine cannot find the input table or query 'MuhurtaTable0'. Make sure it exists and that its name is spelled correctly.’
Ans. You need to save a file called Muhurtdb.mdb in your Muhurta folder. Please proceed as follows:

Please download the file from
http://www.parashara.com/download/Muhurtdb.mdb and save it to your system.
Please launch Windows Explorer. Locate this file and select it. Right click on it and select ‘Copy’.
Now look for the ‘Muhurta’ directory in the drive where you installed the program. In all probability it should be C: . Double click on ‘Muhurta’. Next Select the ‘Bin folder. Right click on it and paste the file Muhurtdb.mdb Restart the program.
This will resolve your problem.

Q.13 I am unable to install the German Version of Shri Muhurta. It seems as though this file is missing from the Cd itself as the Cd contents display only the English version of Shri Muhurta.
Ans. It appears that there is a slight glitch in the installer which only affects the German version and installation on the system where the CD rom is not the D drive. In other words, the installer only installs the German version properly when installed from the D drive. Therefore there is no problem with the CD that you have.

To install the software, please do the following:

  1. If you have multiple CD drives in your computer, use the one that is the D drive
  2. If the D drive is not a CD Rom but a hard drive then please create a directory "SMCD"on the D drive and copy all contents from the CD into that folder. After doing that you can run the installer by clicking on the Start button (typically in the left lower corner of your screen), selecting the Run command and entering D:/SMCD/setup.exe at the command prompt.
After running the program for the first time, you'll see an Activation Form, which will display a System ID and will ask be asked to enter a name and a password. Please kindly e-mail that system Id to
sales@parashara.com.
